Meal Management for those with Acidity Problems

Why does acidity occur?

Acidity is a situation indicated by heartburn felt around the lower chest area, which is due to the stomach acid flowing back up into the food pipe.  Acidity takes place when the gastric glands generate a large amount of acid, more than what is desired for the digestion process. This condition is recognized by a burning sensation just above the stomach.

Acidity can occur due to unhealthy eating habits, certain foods consumed in excess, as a side effect of medicines, existing medical conditions, and other causes such as stress, lack of sleep, etc.

The symptoms of acidity include a burning sensation in the stomach, throat, and heart, difficulty in swallowing, restlessness, nausea, prolonged sour taste in the mouth, indigestion, and constipation.

Gooseberries or amla contains a high amount of vitamin C which helps in healing the damaged stomach lining and esophagus. Have one teaspoon of amla powder daily to prevent those annoying bouts of acidity.

Avoid Foods That Trigger Acidity

Maintain a Regular Eating Time

Maintaining long intervals between meals is another cause for acidity. Have small but regular meals and at least three hours before you go to sleep.

Sleep on your left side

When you hit the bed, turn onto your left side and sleep. This position prevents acid reflux as it does not allow corrosive stomach acids to enter the esophagus.

Get some form of exercise

Lack of exercise leads to excessive deposition of fats, especially in the abdominal area. Do those crunches and runs regularly to prevent acidity and shed those extra pounds.

Drink lots of water

Water helps to neutralize the acid and throw out the excess digestive juices present in the stomach. If you are suffering from frequent acidity and heartburn, drink a glass of lukewarm water in the morning and at night before going to sleep.

Unhealthy weight is the leading cause of acidity. Extra stomach fat places pressure on your abdomen, pushing digestive juices up into your esophagus.

Don’t lie down after eating and elevate your bed

Wait around three hours before you take a nap after a meal. Elevating the head of your bed six to eight inches can help gravity keep digestive acid down in your stomach. Don’t use extra pillows, as they only raise your head and will not help with acidity. You need your whole upper body raised to get relief.
