What is L-Carnitine…?
The amino acid which is naturally produced in the body that converts fat into energy is called L- Carnitine. This amino acid exists in almost every cell of the body. It is found in other forms like acetyl-L-Carnitine and propionyl-L-Carnitine. Originally, when it was first researched in the 1950s, it was named as Vitamin BT.
People having a low level of L-Carnitine in their body are generally provided with L-Carnitine supplements. This condition might arise in people suffering from any kind of genetic disorder, people taking drugs or those undergoing through any medical treatment. The best source of L-Carnitine is meat and other animal products. Some of the plant products like avocado and soybeans are also rich in it.
The main function performed by L-Carnitine is transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells which can further be oxidized to generate adenosine triphosphate or commonly referred to as ATP. This ATP is the main source of energy in the human body.
The various functions performed by L-Carnitine are:
In relieving from Chest pain
People suffering from chest pain or angina lack in exercise tolerance level. This needs to be enhanced. This can easily be done by supplementing the diet of these people with L-Carnitine.
As a Brain booster
The compound has a unique specialty of enhancing the level of alertness in the body, the capacity of the mitochondria and supporting the working of neurons.
In curing Kidney Diseases
During the process of hemodialysis which is generally conducted on people in the last stage of their kidney diseases, it is found that the red blood cells count in individual drops. Thus, taking the dosage of L-carnitine helps in building more red blood cells.
Studies and researches conducted in the USA have suggested the use of L- carnitine in patients having kidney diseases.
In providing better and a healthy Skin
L-carnitine is a kind of blessing for people with oily skin or a number of acne. Studies have reflected that using a cream made from this compound enhances the amount of fat entering the cells which in consequence decreases the secretion of oil by the skin. Ultimately, this helps in the natural treatment of acne and thus rendering a fine texture to the skin
As an Anti-Depressant
As earlier explained, L-carnitine helps in enhancing the energy level in the body. With an increased amount of energy, the depressing attitude in humans undergoes a change and people feel relieved and relaxed.
Enhances the Memory Power
The consumption of L-carnitine leads to the production of acetylcholine, a kind of With the advancement of memory loss, people generally experience loss in acetylcholine. The supplementation of L-carnitine enhances the production of energy which acts as food for these hungry brain cells. When these cells are satisfied, they retard the process of memory loss, ultimately leading to better memory.
Improves Male Fertility
There exists a direct proportionality between the amount of L-Carnitine in semen and sperm count. Higher the amount of L-Carnitine in sperm, larger is the sperm count. Thus, taking L-Carnitine helps in providing more energy for sperm cells, increasing their number and thus reducing male infertility.
Reduces Chronic Fatigue
Fatigue is a common and widespread problem encountered by almost every person once or more in a lifetime. The presence of L-Carnitine plays a vital role in reducing the problem of fatigue. This is so because L-Carnitine has the ability to break down the fatty acids into energy producing compounds.
Enhances the Enduring capacity
This amino acid plays a vital role in energy production. Energy production is closely related to the enduring capacity of athletes. So, the supplementation of L-Carnitine helps in enhancing the enduring capacity of the individual.
Helps in Weight loss
The presence of L-Carnitine in the body helps in the breakdown of fats into energy. This helps in lowering down the quantity of lactic acid produced during exercising, lowers the damage done to the cells and thus consequently lowers cell death. Hence, this in a way has an impact on weight loss.
Helps in preventing Muscle damage–
Many times it is found that L-Carnitine acts as an energy booster, so it in a way helps in preventing damage to the muscles (also see how steroids can harm our body!).
Acts as an agent for Anti-aging–
With growing age, the concentration of L-Carnitine in tissues reduces and thereby the mitochondrial function is hampered. This obstruction in mitochondrial function is a great contributor to ageing. Providing extra supplementation of L-Carnitine helps in retarding this process of ageing.
As a cure in Type 2 Diabetes–
The main reason behind the disease of type 2 diabetes is the issue of insulin resistance which is caused because of the dis-functioning of mitochondria. The irregular or defective oxidation of fatty acids contributes to the disease. Hence, the addition of L-Carnitine is a healthy step in order to improvise insulin sensitivity.
Hence, as already discussed the functions performed by L-Carnitine are numerous. However, even the moon is not free from blemishes. So, the consumption of L-Carnitine has some drawbacks as well. Many times taking an extra dosage of this amino acid can result in serious repercussions like that of vomiting, diarrhea, a fishy body odor, abdominal cramps, nausea etc.
Overall, one can say that the presence of L-Carnitine is very useful and acts as a blessing for the health of an individual. But, care is to be taken to use this L-Carnitine in limited amounts by exercising due diligence and then only one can enjoy the fruits of L-Carnitine.
