Niacin is otherwise known as vitaminB3. It is highly beneficial for the body in managing good cholesterol levels and several types of arthritis. Niacin has two different forms that possess different effects on the body. One is nicotinic acid which has an effect on cholesterol treatment and the other is nicotinamide which has an effect on type 1 diabetes. Niacin being water-soluble, when becomes excess in the body is excreted out easily causing not many complications. If can be obtained from food or by the oxidation of tryptophan inside the body.

Niacin has its action on NAD and NADP, the two coenzymes involved in cellular metabolism. Moreover, it even sways its action over cell-signaling and DNA repair. A person suffers from a Variety of symptoms and irritations under niacin deficiency like depression, diarrhea, skin problems, fatigue, and memory loss, this is termed as pellagra.

There is a proper dose of niacin depending upon the age and body type of an individual, then it proves to be beneficial. Studies have revealed that niacin helps reduce the LDL and manages the HDL-cholesterol levels. It is particularly used for people with station sensitivity. It also acts upon the triglycerides by seizing the enzymatic action and thereby manages the LDL and VLDLvolume. Due it’s the ability to control cholesterol levels it has the ability to control heart disease. Prevents inflammation of arteries called atherosclerosis and help reduce oxidative stress. The nicotinamide helps treat type l diabetes which is an autoimmune disorder. Niacin can protect the pancreatic cells that get destroyed during the disease, especially in children. Monitors brain health, being a part of NAD and NADP, it provides energy for proper brain functioning. Moreover, it is also used to treat schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Nicotinamide helps protect the skin from various types of melanoma or skin cancer. It even acts as sun protection. effectively reduces the inflammation of arthritis allowing joint mobility. Osteoarthritis can even with treated with niacin injections. Pellagra, a disease due to niacin deficiency can be prevented.

There are a ton of food supplements like fish poultry, bread, a cereal that have high vitamin B3 levels. Chicken breast has 59% of niacin, tuna and Salmon have 3933% of niacin. Beef has 33% niacin. Bran flakes, peanut, and wholegrain bread have 9-25% of niacin .sometimes our health condition foretells us to supplement niacin so as to treat high cholesterol levels and diabetes.

When niacin is supplemented more than the required dose, that we get from food, then side effects develop.  The most common side effect is Niacin flush, this results as due to dilation of blood vessels revealing flush on the face neck and causes pain.  Stomach irritation and nausea are common due to high nicotinic acid that even results in persistent vomiting. Liver toxicity may increase leading to liver damage. Niacin increases uric acid content in body provoking gout. Eye health is affected, sometimes advocating a blurred vision. Impaired blood sugars levels have been administered in the body, it is because the nicotinic acid which reduces the blood cholesterol levels assuring the heart health also elevates the blood sugar levels, putting the risk of having type 2 diabetes in an individual. So a person who is administered with niacin should have a regular check on sugar levels in the blood.

Out of the eight vitamins of vitamin B family niacin or vitamin B3 is highly beneficial, provided it is efficiently obtained from the food we eat and variedly from the body itself. But some medical condition forces us to supplement it through pills or capsules. So a regular check on the supplement requirements should be kept and a regular eye on its side effects must be noted. An able physician can make a good diet plan so that you do not suffer from niacin deficiency.
