What is a Panic Attack?


The Panic Attack is a phenomenon in which an individual is overcome with an overwhelming feeling of fear, anxiety, and despair. Panic attacks come without warning and can cause a varying range of discomforts in an individual. As a matter of fact, the amount and seriousness vary from one individual to another, however, certain common factor, like chest pain, fear, dizziness continues to remain.


Panic attacks can also occur in the midst of the sleep and can wake you up. Panic attacks can be recurrent or may be a one-time event. Often, recurrent panic attacks are triggered by a particular situation that a person is scared of. Panic attacks disturb the mental and physical well being of an individual. Repeated panic attacks should be treated and a doctor must be consulted immediately.


Are Panic Attacks an Overreaction and Intentionally Dramatic?

It is a common myth that panic attacks are an overreaction and dramatic. However, looking at it scientifically, panic attacks are not an overreaction, neither are they dramatic. As a matter of fact, the people going through a panic attack usually go through an immense amount of pain. Though it might seem to common people who don’t face such attacks that, the ‘panic attacks’ are nothing but another way of attention seeking – however, this is not true.


The people undergoing a panic attack are undergoing a great deal of pain and they are definitely not seeking attention. It is important to note, panic attacks can occur to people who are otherwise normal, without any health issues. Panic attacks can also be a result of other diseases like depression or social phobia.


Symptoms of Panic attack:


Though the symptoms of a panic attack may vary from person to person, it ranges from a headache to even chest pain. Some of the symptoms of a panic attack are as follows.


  1. The Racing of Heart: During the panic attack, the heartbeat tends to become faster. Occurring under stress, the panic attack causes a racing of heartbeat, like a race has been run.
  2. 2. Nausea: Often the feeling of nausea occurs whenever we are feeling nervous. The feeling of nausea reaches a new level altogether during a panic attack. Nausea is a phenomenal symptom of panic attacks.
  3. Shortness of air: You will start feeling choked and will breathe harder, for more air. There is acute difficulty in breathing unless an individual comes out of the danger.
  4. 4. Immense sweating: Along with the heart-racing and shortness of breathing, panic attacks welcome immense sweating out of stress, too.
  5. Numbness: Often, in the face of danger, on the verge of panic, an overwhelming feeling of numbness is felt.
  6. Trembling: Just like nervousness makes us tremble, similarly, a panic attack magnifies it to a greater extent.


Apart from all these symptoms, other symptoms like a feeling of detachment, stomach upset, hot or cold flashes might also be present in an individual.


Hence, it is quite evident that a person cannot fake such symptoms. As a matter of fact, the symptoms are pretty much evident and one can easily identify a person undergoing a panic attack.

When panic attacks occur repeatedly, it can be a panic disorder too. However, panic disorder combined with agoraphobia is dangerous. Agoraphobia is the phenomenon in which individual fears facing a panic attack in public, which will be difficult to handle.  Hence, they tend to avoid public places, crowded regions and so on.


The Solutions to Panic Attack


Panic attacks are often caused due to a situation or event. That is, it is an event triggered. Some people decide to follow a mechanism to adopt calm them during a panic attack. As a second person, you should directly ask the victim what they need. You can try and calm them down, offer a glass of water and so on.


It is very important to note that even a normal person can have a panic attack. It is not compulsory to have mental disorders in order to face panic attacks.

Recurrent panic attacks are often triggered by a situation. It is best to avoid such situations. However, if that is not possible, it is important for the patient to learn the coping mechanism in order to maintain calm in that unpleasant and stressful sit
